Nordic Handcraft Workshop: Birch Bark Clutch

  • American Swedish Institute 2600 Park Ave Minneapolis, MN (map)

Learn about the harvest and use of the paper birch while creating a small clutch out of locally harvested birch bark. Students will learn the basics of the double diagonal plaited weave pattern and elaborate further by adding a woven bark or leather flap. The clutch’s size is roughly 7” x 4” and will have a small handle – perfect for phone, keys and wallet. This will easily become your favorite accessory!

Students are encouraged to bring their own antler, toggle or beads for closures. The instructor will bring leather for a flap and a wrap-around tie or other attachments. Students need no prior basket weaving experience, but should have good finger dexterity and hand strength. Minimum participation age 16.

Cost:

$155 American Swedish Institute members / $175 non-members

An additional $50 materials fee is payable to the instructor.
