Nordic Craft Workshop: Birch Bark Necklace

Make a completely unique, locally sourced, handmade necklace! Students will be introduced to the history and ecology of birch trees and discuss sustainable harvesting practices, then spend the rest of the day splitting bark and learning how to make three-fold, four-fold and cube style birch bark beads. After creating a few dozen bark beads, students will combine them with colorful glass beads to string together a beautiful (and hard wearing) birch bark necklace. This class is appropriate for new and more experienced basket weavers, and is a great opportunity to discover a new appreciation for birch and weaving. Woven Birch Bark Basketry @ North House Folk School

Whether for proofing or baking, storage or decoration, there is nothing like a woven birch bark basket to grace the kitchen or home. Scandinavians in particular have long recognized the beauty and usefulness of the white birch tree, with its tough yet flexible bark, weaving baskets from its bark for a variety of utilitarian purposes. In this course you will learn how to use the double-diagonal weave, opening up the possibilities of weaving a variety of birch bark projects including a hanging mail basket, pencil and eyeglass baskets or purses or backpacks. Students will learn to weave in the double diagonal by making a bread basket to bake your bread in - creating some spectacularly inspiring loaves. As time allows, students will explore additional birch bark weaving projects ranging from knife sheaths to birch bark beads.

Woven Birch Bark Backpack @ North House Folk School

to Jul 9

Woven Birch Bark Backpack @ North House Folk School

This is the granddaddy of woven birch bark projects: the beautiful, functional birch bark backpack. The course will begin by harvesting bark in the field learning and practicing sustainable techniques for legal harvest. Students will then use hand tools to prepare their bark strips and then weave them into a backpack, measuring roughly 9"-10" x 11"-12", depending on material selections. Students will choose from two designs: either a birch bark base and a hand-stitched leather flap, pocket and straps or a slightly smaller all birch pack with a bark flap and leather straps. All backpacks will be woven using the diagonal plaited pattern. This project uses fresh bark, which has a surprisingly different feel than working with older bark. Because of the quantity and quality of the bark needed for this project, it will only be offered once per year in a small class setting. Although no prior weaving skills are necessary for this class, all students will be expected to process their own weavers, which requires good hand dexterity. Some experience working with your hands is helpful. Most students have found this class to be harder than expected.
